What does "green" taste like?

If anyone has read my brother Scott's blog, http://beanland.wordpress.com/2008/11/13/hmbg-recap-achieving-and-maintaining-a-healthy-body-weight/#more-383, you know he advocates green smoothies. I find the thought of drinking something green daunting. What does "green" taste like? Grass, earth, compost....I feel my leg and arm pit hair growing just thinking about it. Words like "groovy" and "far out" slip into my vocabulary. "Hey, guys? Has anyone seen my Birkenstocks?" But, I decided to give it a try. I tossed a banana, an orange (the inside of the granola rind), a few frozen strawberries, and a big handful of raw spinach into the Vitamix, added a splash of water and let 'er rip. The resulting concoction was the color of pond sludge, but smelled like banana and strawberry. It definitely confused the senses! But it was delicious!! Each of the kids tried it and attempted to finish off my glass without being caught. No earthy, grassy, or spinachy taste at all. Just yummy fruit loaded with vitamins and nutrients that I otherwise would have missed out on. 4 hours later I still wasn't hungry.

Mmmm that looks like my breakfast! Mackenzie digs a good green smoothie as well, though I have to go easy on the frozen berries otherwise it's too cold for her gummies. Also, too much crazy veg and she balks. But I can get a lot of spinach in there and she'll drink it with a (very messy) smile.

If you're going for appetizing appearance, you either have to lose the strawberries (green + red = yucky brown) and embrace the green, or toss in some highly-blue/black berries as well. That way the whole thing looks purple and fruity, and the green is under-cover.

Have you tried spinach-unsweetened cocoa powder-banana in the vitamix? Mmmmm. It's green but takes like a chocolate banana milkshake.

Embrace the weird, Deb. Most people aren't healthy, so if you are... you might stick out a little. :)

"Stick out a little"... Hey, I resemble that!!! HA HA HA Of course, it probably helps that I'm pregnant, too! hee hee

Glad you like the pic, Deb. It made me laugh.

Anne,

I'm trying the green choco/banan for breakfast this morning. Sounds really good! Having kids eat like this from the get-go is definitely way to go. Our younger kids didn't even hesitate, while the older ones took a little convincing. Once tried they all loved it, though.

I've alway's been a little weird, so I really do need to stop worrying and embrace this! Keep encouraging us, Anne!

Um...interesting, Deb...haha....love hearing how you're learning and growing. For real, I've always said "groovy" and "far out" but not with the whole green thing. Oh well. I look forward to reading more about this. The shakes sound good, even with weird colors. I was thinking that the Andes mints would be a good green thing - and it has the chocolate food group represented.

And so it's freezing here, and we're putting plans together for Thanksgiving. I was thinking some of those spice cookies sounded good but can't find the recipe you used to have. Perhaps it's been updated to fit the new lifestyle? Send it on!

Love to you and yours. Have a great Thanksgiving!
